The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil have been found to “fend off disease—including heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, psoriasis and even attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder,” according to a January 8, 2008 Wall Street Journal article. Some nutritionists believe that daily consumption of up to 1000 mg of fish oil can help boost metabolic rate, thereby nourishing skin and aiding in weight loss.
Chinese medicine touts the therapeutic abilities of walnuts and almonds and pumpkin seeds. Make yourself a mix of all three seeds/nuts and eat a small amount every day (to make them easier to digest, soak them overnight in water). Or, in the alternative, take a teaspoonful of walnut oil first thing in the morning. At the Wednesday Santa Monica farmer’s market, there is a walnut purveyor from north of Ojai who sells raw walnuts and walnut oil. Though the oil is not inexpensive, it is clean and buttery and smooth, and regular consumption is a dietary treat.
